Andrew Ferren is a versatile musician, producer, and teaching artist from the San Francisco Bay Area, known for his work with the saxophone, flute, clarinet, and electronic music. His musical journey began at a young age with piano, and by age 10, he focused on the saxophone, later adding the flute and clarinet to his repertoire.


At age 12, after attending a Stan Getz concert, Ferren solidified his desire to pursue music professionally. Raised in a musically diverse household, he was exposed to jazz, classical, R&B, pop, rock, and folk music, which greatly influenced his musical style.

During high school, Ferren began composing and arranging music for small ensembles, establishing himself professionally as a saxophonist and bandleader.

After graduation, he moved to Seattle to continue his studies and explore Brazilian and Latin American music. His musical journey intensified when he moved to New York City to attend The New School University, where he received his degree in jazz and contemporary music where he had the opportunity to with esteemed musicians George Garzone, Chris Cheek, Jim Black, and Jane Ira Bloom.


 

In New York, Ferren co-founded the electronic improv-rock band Doctor Oscillator, which merged his interests in hip-hop, electronic music, and improvisation. This passion for the intersection of technology and sound later led to the creation of Alpharay, a project where Ferren integrates his skills as a composer, producer, and performer, both solo and with a full band.
 

Since relocating to San Francisco in 2006, Ferren has continued to innovate, blending saxophone, flute, and electronic instruments in his performances. He has played at prestigious venues such as Yoshi's, The Blue Note, and The Great American Music Hall, collaborating with talented musicians across the West Coast. His diverse musical output reflects his commitment to pushing sonic boundaries and exploring new creative territories.

His musical journey began early on with piano lessons, then focussing on the saxophone a few years later. Over the years, he has expanded his instrumental expertise to include flute and clarinet, and recording arts, developing a distinctive voice that bridges jazz, rock, electronic, improvisation, and experimental music.

Ferren’s passion for music crystallized at age 12, after attending a Stan Getz concert that cemented his decision to pursue a professional career in music. Growing up in a household rich with diverse musical influences, he was exposed to everything from jazz and classical to R&B, pop, rock, and folk. These varied genres shaped his eclectic sound, which blends technical virtuosity with an intuitive sense of melody and groove.

 

Ferren began composing and arranging for small ensembles, earning accolades and recognition as both a skilled saxophonist and a visionary bandleader. After graduating, he moved to Seattle to further his studies and explore the vibrant world of Brazilian and Latin American music—a pivotal step that expanded his global musical perspective.

Ferren's journey took a transformative leap when he moved to New York City to study at The New School University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in music. There, he honed his craft under the mentorship of world-class musicians like George Garzone, Chris Cheek, Jim Black, and Jane Ira Bloom. His time in New York also sparked his interest in the fusion of technology and sound, leading him to co-found the experimental electronic-improv-rock band Doctor Oscillator. The project was a fusion of his love for hip-hop, jazz, rock, electronic music, and improvisation, pushing the boundaries of both genre and performance.

 

This exploration of sound and technology culminated in Alpharay, a solo project that sees Ferren combining his skills as a composer, producer, and performer. Whether working alone or with a full band, Alpharay represents his ongoing commitment to sonic innovation and creative expression.
